Product Description PIXAR SHORT FILM COLLECTION: VOLUME 1
Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in "Geri's Game" and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in "Boundin'." Some of the more recent shorts continue the adventures of the characters from the features. "Jack-Jack Attack" reveals what happened to the hapless baby-sitter while the Incredibles were off fighting Syndrome, while "Mater and the Ghost Light" shows that life goes on for the inhabitants of Radiator Springs. When Sully from Monsters, Inc. tries to adjust his seat in "Mike's New Car," the animators prolong the moment to wring every drop of humor from the situation--just as an earlier generation of animators milked Wile E. Coyote's antics for all they were worth. The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus. A delightful collection of entertaining shorts, and a significant chronicle of the growth of computer animation. (Rated G: suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Pixar Short Films August 8, 2010 Charles Young 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've seen a few of the short films in other Pixar movies, so I thought it would be cool to see the other ones. The movies start in the 80's and go to the present. The best(few) ones are within the last 5 years, and, for some reason, they were the ones I've already seen. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't being sold at a movie price. All in all, I think everyone would get more satisfaction and entertainment out of almost any movie. Yes, I'm not buying volume 2.
Not everything I saw on the Disney channel June 29, 2010 Kayla Jensen (Minot, ND USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this movie because I saw it on the Disney Channel and I enjoyed most of the shorts. My favorites are the magician one, the one about the history of rats, and "Boundin'".
However, what they don't tell you is that the DVD ends its shorts in 2007 with 'Lifted' (which is on Ratatouille). On TV there are a lot more shorts: all the ones from Wall*E, the other short from Ratatouille about rats ('your friend the rat', I think), all the 'Mater's Tall Tales' ones, etc. Two of my favorites, the magician one and 'Your Friend the Rat', are not on this DVD.
I did really enjoy the Pixar shorts documentary and liked learning about the early days of computer animation; I also like learning trivia about how a specific movie is made. I would have to say that this documentary and the short "Boundin'" were the two things I liked about this movie.
I love many Pixar movies (except for The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., A Bug's Life, and UP), and I enjoy Pixar's shorts, but this movie falls flat for me as it is missing most of my favorite shorts and has mostly the ones I like the least.
This movie says it's 'Volume 1'. Does that mean in the future they will come out with a 'Volume 2' which has the other ones shown on TV? I hope so; I would buy it if it had more great bonus features like the documentary, and the other two of my favorite shorts.
Good collection, but the price is not right. June 7, 2010 Don't tread on me (North Carolina, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This DVD has a great collection of the Pixar shorts. Many of the shorts help show how far Pixar has come and how creative they are. 'Presto' and 'For The Birds' alone make this DVD worth having. The chess game short (don't remember the title) is boring, so I usually skip it. It would have received 5 stars from me, but the price is a bit excessive. Most places I have seen it sell it for $20.00 +. Many of the Pixar full length movies don't sell for that much. If you don't mind the high price, it is a good collection of family friendly cartoons.
